Most importantly, the majority of pros swing consistently to a 9:30( a little more than half way back)position on most of their bunker shots around the green. In fact, the length of bunker shots is basically determined by how open the club is when you address the ball!

The average bunker shot around the green is about 18/20 yards. To get outstanding results you must first determine the base of your swing and then how much to open your club in order to get a yardage of 18/20 yards. Everyone is different. This takes a little practice. Once you figure out this simple equation then you can go off this information to truly dial in your sand game.

Opening or closing your club 1-degree effects your shot by 1 to 2 yards. It’s truly that easy!

Approaching The Ball

1. Your feet are in a slightly open position when you address the ball. Most of your weight should be on your front foot. The weight of your body should be firmly planted and then stomp your feet to get firmly planted if you need to.

2. The ball should be INSIDE the heel of your front foot and the club should be around 1.5”/2” behind the ball to guarantee the bounce of the club is utilized and to avoid digging into sand. Again, this position is very important to effectively use the bounce of the club.

Your Swing Mechanics

3. Turning your shoulders is by far the most important thing about getting consistent results out of the sand regarding yardage. Think of turning your back to the target and adjust your shoulders to a 9:30 position. Think of you using your torso to swing the club back and through. A common mistake of many golfers do is lifting their arms to imitate a shoulder turn. This is not a shoulder turn. Turn back to target and turn through! It’s truly that simple.

Practice this by putting a club across your shoulders horizontally and practice turning. You will find the secret to consistent bunker play is by capturing this feeling.

4. Cock and hold your wrist through the swing to help the ball stop quickly! This method works great
with flop shots!

5. The second most important thing to remember about a bunker shot. There is limited lateral movement of your legs/knees during any part of the swing. Next, your hips do turn back and through the swing, but there should be limited lateral leg movement through the swing while
maintaining a quiet lower body. Following these suggestions will ensure pro results. Horrible and disastrous results are typically the result of lateral movement of the knees and legs.
